There was rarely a time, when we visited Grandma Stella that she didn't have two or three kinds of cookies for us to snack on. {The cookie jars were right next to the M&M dispenser and jar of orange slices} Her favorites to bake were chocolate chip, molasses and crisp, sugary sugar cookies. The buttery, crispy, melt-in-your-mouth texture is something to behold. Two musts when you bake like Grandma Stella: You must roll your sugar cookies in granulated sugar and you must press the cookies with a fork and make the criss-cross pattern on top.
Sugar Cookies
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup canola oil
1/2 cup butter, room temperature
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
dash of salt
Cream butter and sugars. Add oil, eggs and vanilla until combined. Sift together dry ingredients, then add to previous mixture. Mix well. Make balls about 1/2-3/4 Tbsp size {use small PC scoop, tear in half for two cookie balls}. Roll balls in sugar. Place balls on baking mat lined sheet a few inches apart. Using a fork with large tines, press to make cross-cross pattern on cookies and flatten balls. Bake in 350 degree preheated oven for about 12 minutes. Bake until slightly browned on edges. ~Makes about 52 small cookies.
