Grandma Stella's Bon Bons

Grandma Stella's specialty at Christmas, these little balls of heaven!  I can still picture them on her dining room table spread of goodies, alongside her date cookies and bright green cucumber pickles.  They will always be a part of our Christmas celebration.

Grandma Stella's Bon Bons

2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 cup butter
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 pound coconut
1/4 cup chopped walnuts

3/4 cake Gulf wax
1 package semi sweet chocolate chips

Cream powdered sugar, butter and condensed milk.  Add coconut and nuts.  Chill dough firm.  Roll in balls and chill firm or freeze for a bit.  Melt wax and chocolate chips until smooth.  Using a toothpick, poke a ball, pick up and dunk in chocolate.  Set on waxed paper by pushing off toothpick with a second pick in other hand.  Spoon a tiny amount on hole created by toothpick if needed.  Allow to set up overnight.  Store in airtight container.  These freeze perfectly.

{large Jif peanut butter container holds about 25-30 bon bons}

UPDATE:  Gulf Wax can is usually in the canning or baking section at your local grocery store.  I know, completely weird to put something that is intended for candlemaking or paraffin bathing in candy coating, but my family has done it for years and years and they are the best!
As with all treats, everything in moderation is okay in my house and until I read in an obituary that the cause of death is directly linked to Velveeta or Gulf Wax, I will continue to happily use both in my recipes.  Nine out of ten cardiologists probably disagree with me...the tenth has eaten Grandma Stella's Bon Bons.  The box contains four 'cakes' and will last me at least five years.

I would love to respond personally to every one, but as a busy mom, I generally respond here on the blog rather than email. Have a great day!
